Summer Break a Glimpse of life after High School

This has to have been the longest most boring summer of the boys’ lives. I remember when I was 15, summer meant baseball and camping, taking my bike to the trails; of course I grew up in rural

Wyoming and when I was 15, it was 1976 and there were no video games or DVD players. We did have vacation bible school, but I think I got kicked out of that by the age of 15.

Outside of Adams Camp and a few weekend road trips to see family or friends, Kyle and Hunter have logged many hours with play station and watching videos this summer. Hiring a 13 year old to watch my two 15 years olds is out of the question; having Down syndrome has it challenges, figuring out how to escape when you are not looking is not one of them and my boys’ excel at being ultra quiet when they want to get away with something they’re not supposed to be getting away with.

So, my wife works weekends that occasionally overlap into a weekday or two leaving me to work from home and how much quality work do you think I get done with two very active teenagers in the house? With two weeks to go until school is back in session I have realized several things:

  1. What happens when my sons are finished with High School?
  2. Will they work or even qualify for services so that they can be trained to work?
  3. What kind of schedules will they have?
  4. How will they get from home to work?
  5. When they are 49 and God willing, I am still on this earth with them, how will they recall the summer of 2010 when they were 15?

I still feel my best shot (besides winning the lottery) to truly make a difference in their lives and the lives of those like my sons is for my book to sell and sell tem million copies. In the mean time, my next stop is www.bestbuddies.org, this organization intrigues me, but of course the only programs available in Colorado are college and email buddies; give me a break Colorado, step up to the plate . . . I think I will, thank you.
